Harvesting Trust.
At Ortega’s Nopalitos, we take pride in what we do: delivering fresh, high-quality prickly pear cactus—known in Hispanic culture as nopal. Since 2007, we’ve grown to become one of Houston’s top five nopal providers, with a presence expanding across the U.S.
Backed by over 15 years of combined experience, we’re committed to offering nutrient-rich, sustainably grown nopales. From the soil to the natural fertilizers we use, every step is guided by our dedication to quality, health, and tradition.
Nopales have always been apart of the Ortega Family
The endless ways nopales can be prepared is one of the many reasons it has become a favorite ingredient in not just Ortega household but many Hispanic households throughout the United States as well. In 1995 the Ortega family sought out to buy a few acres in their homeland of Michoacan, Mexico. Years later the land was sold and the funds were reallocated to nopal farms where Ortega’s Nopalitos now sources their product from. Working with those same farmers in Michoacan they are able to provide dozens of jobs for the local communities there as well as here in Houston. The labor intense product requires a human touch of produce preparation that no machine can come close to achieving. Ortega’s Nopalitos is dedicated to providing the highest nopales in Houston and surrounding cities. Find us at a La Michoacana grocery store near you!

From Farm to Table:
OUR NOPALITOS PROCESS
1. Harvested with Tradition
Our nopales are sourced from family-owned farms in Mexico, where experienced farmers carefully hand-harvest young prickly pear cactus pads at their most tender and flavorful stage. At this point, the pads have minimal spines and maximum nutritional value. Known as nopal in Mexican cuisine, this beloved vegetable offers a texture and flavor similar to green beans—and is a staple in countless traditional dishes.
2. Shipped with Care
After harvest, the fresh pads are transported directly to our facility in Texas. We ensure quick and careful handling to preserve freshness and quality during transit.
3. Expert Cleaning
At our Texas warehouse, our skilled team manually removes any remaining spines using traditional methods. This meticulous process guarantees a safe and smooth product for consumption.
4. Hand-Chopped to Perfection
Once cleaned, the nopales are hand-cut into convenient, modest-sized pieces—perfect for cooking right out the bag.
5. Packed for You
Our freshly prepared nopales are packed into mulitple convenient bag sizes to suit any kitchen, family size, or recipe. Each bag is sealed with care and freshness in mind.
6. Delivered Fresh
Once sealed, our products are distributed to local grocery stores—ready to bring flavor, fiber, and tradition to your plate.
