Simple Pre-Cooked Nopalitos with Onion and Cilantro

This traditional prep brings out rich, earthy flavor while keeping the texture just right. A foundational staple that’s ready to complement any dish, from tacos to eggs and beyond.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs of fresh nopalitos (chopped)

  • 1 Slice of onion

  • 4 Sprigs of cilantro

  • 1 Tsp garlic salt

Instructions

Step 1: Rinse Nopalitos

Before cooking, rinse the nopalitos thoroughly in a strainer under cold water. Let them drain for 1 minute. Meanwhile, heat a non-stick (Teflon) pan over medium heat.

Step 2: Season & Add Aromatics

Once hot, add the nopalitos directly to the pan. Sprinkle garlic salt to taste, then add the onion slice and cilantro sprigs.

Step 3: Cook in Natural Juices

Cook everything over medium heat without water, using the nopalitos’ natural juice. Let them cook for about 20–25 minutes, until they change color and the juice is mostly absorbed.

Step 4: Drain & Prepare for Use

Turn off the heat and drain any remaining liquid using a strainer. If they release too much juice, you can rinse them again briefly with cold water and let them drain well. They're now ready to use in your favorite recipe!
